How to Choose the Right Face Oil for Your Skin Type

Choosing a face oil can feel overwhelming.

There are so many options available and all promising different results, hydration, glow, balance and it’s hard to know where to start. But finding the right oil doesn’t have to be complicated. When you understand what your skin actually needs, it becomes so much easier to choose something that works with your skin, not against it.
Start with what your skin needs, not trends.
It’s easy to be drawn to what’s popular on Instagram or Tik Tok or widely recommended by one of the 'paid' celebrity endorsements - (this drives me mad by the way, I see and hear so many people complaining about reactions and how something hasn't worked for them because they have bought something from TikTok, please go to a trusted source for real skincare recommendations not a paid 'influencer' who will tell you anything to get the sale) But skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all. Instead of following trends, ask does my skin feel dry or tight? is it producing excess oil? does it feel sensitive or reactive? Your skin will usually tell you what it needs you just need to listen.
For dry or dehydrated skin
Skin that feels dry often needs oils that are richer and more nourishing.
Look for oils that help to soften and smooth, reduce moisture loss, support long-lasting hydration. These types of oils help to reinforce the skin barrier and bring comfort back to the skin.
For oily or breakout-prone skin
It might feel counterintuitive, but oily skin can hugely benefit from the right facial oil.
Lightweight oils can help to balance sebum production, reduce the cycle of over-stripping and overproducing oil, support calmer, more stable skin. The key is choosing oils that absorb easily and don’t feel heavy.

For sensitive or reactive skin
Sensitive skin often needs simplicity more than anything else.
Look for minimal, gentle formulations, oils that support the skin barrier, ingredients that help reduce feelings of irritation. Formulations containing oat or rice are usally great for sensitive or sensitised skins. Avoid overly complex blends or strong actives that can overwhelm the skin. Bisabolol may also be found in these types of formulations, often derived from chamomile, it helps sensitive skin by calming irritation, reducing redness, supporting the skin’s natural healing process, and enhancing the absorption of other beneficial ingredients.
For dull or tired-looking skin
If your skin is lacking radiance, facial oils can help restore a natural glow.
Look for oils rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, skin-supporting nutrients. Vitamins C and E, omega-rich fatty acids (3, 6 and 9), and plant compounds like phytosterols and polyphenols all help nourish and protect. These help to revive the appearance of the skin and improve overall texture over time.
Texture matters more than you think

Not all oils feel the same on the skin. Some are rich and slow-absorbing, while others are light and almost weightless. The right texture for you will depend on:
your skin type
your preference (light vs more nourishing)
when you plan to use it (day or night)
A well-formulated oil should absorb comfortably without leaving the skin feeling overloaded.
Less, but better
You don’t need to layer multiple oils to see results. One well formulated facial oil, chosen for your skin’s needs, can support hydration, balance and skin barrier health.
Each skin is different, which is why targeted blends matter. The right combination of oils and actives can work in harmony with your skin, rather than overwhelming it.
It’s less about using more, and more about using what’s right for you simple, intentional and effective.
A more intuitive approach to skincare
Choosing a face oil doesn’t need to feel clinical or complicated.
It can be intuitive. Pay attention to how your skin feels after you use something:
does it feel calm?
more balanced?
comfortable throughout the day?
These are often better indicators than any trend or label.
Final thought
The right facial oil shouldn’t feel like an extra step. It should feel like the one step your skin was missing.
