Have you ever caught a familiar scent and instantly been transported back to a specific moment in time?
Perhaps the smell of freshly cut grass reminds you of childhood summers, or the scent of lavender brings a sense of calm after a busy day.
Unlike any of our other senses, smell has a remarkable ability to evoke memories, emotions and physical responses almost instantly. It's something many of us experience every day, yet rarely stop to think about.
So why does scent have such a powerful effect on how we feel?
Why Our Sense of Smell Is So Unique

When we smell something, tiny scent molecules travel through the nose and stimulate receptors that send signals directly to the brain.
What makes this process particularly fascinating is that these signals are closely linked to areas of the brain responsible for memory and emotion.
This is why certain scents can trigger vivid memories or feelings before we've even had time to consciously process them.
A particular fragrance might remind you of a loved one, a favourite holiday, or a comforting moment from years ago. Sometimes the connection is so strong that it feels as though you've been transported back in time. For me the smell of Christmas cake reminds me of my grandma and a certain perfume reminds me of my mum. What scent or aroma brings back memories for you?
The Connection Between Scent and Emotion
Researchers have long explored the relationship between scent and mood.
While everyone's response to fragrance is personal, certain aromas are commonly associated with particular feelings and experiences.
Lavender
Lavender is perhaps one of the most recognised scents associated with relaxation and rest. Its gentle floral aroma is often used in evening rituals, bedtime routines and moments of calm.
Citrus
Scents such as sweet orange, grapefruit and lemon are often described as uplifting, happy and energising. Many people naturally gravitate towards citrus fragrances when they want to feel refreshed or motivated. I absolutely love citrus oils and use them in quite a few Willow & Birch products.
Peppermint

Known for its fresh, cooling aroma, peppermint is often linked with feelings of alertness and focus. Perfect in shower products first thing on a morning.
Rose Geranium
With its soft floral scent, rose geranium is often chosen for its balancing and comforting qualities.
Another of my favourite oils but of course, scent is highly personal. A fragrance that feels calming to one person may evoke entirely different memories or emotions for another.
Patchouli
Patchouli has a rich, earthy aroma that many people find grounding and nostalgic. Many of my customers have said to me that it reminds them of the 60's and the free-spirited "hippy" era, bringing back memories of their youth, music, a sense of freedom and individuality. This deep connection to a particular time and culture is a perfect example of how scent can hold powerful emotional meaning.
Why Scent Plays Such an Important Role in Rituals

Throughout history, scent has been woven into daily life.
From burning herbs and resins to fragrant bath rituals and botanical oils, people have long used aroma as part of practices designed to create comfort, reflection and connection.
Today, many of us still instinctively use scent in similar ways.
Lighting a candle at the end of the day (my personal favourite), adding essential oils to a bath, applying a favourite body product or brewing a cup of herbal tea can all signal to the mind that it's time to slow down.
These small sensory experiences help create a sense of ritual within our daily routines.
Creating Moments of Calm Through Scent
Modern life can often feel fast-paced and sometimes overwhelming.
While scent isn't a magic solution, it can be a simple and accessible way to create moments of pause throughout the day.
You might choose:
Lavender in the evening to encourage relaxation
Citrus scents in the morning to feel refreshed
Peppermint when you need focus and clarity
Floral aromas when you're seeking comfort and balance
Sometimes it's not the scent itself that makes the biggest difference, but the intention behind taking a moment to notice it.

More Than Just a Pleasant Fragrance
Our sense of smell is deeply connected to memory, emotion and experience.
It's one of the reasons a favourite scent can feel so comforting, why certain aromas instantly lift our mood, and why fragrance has remained an important part of human rituals for centuries.
In a world that often encourages us to rush from one task to the next, scent offers a gentle reminder to pause, be present and reconnect with the moment we're in.
And perhaps that's why something as simple as a familiar aroma can have such a powerful effect on how we feel.
