The Ritual Behind Facial Oils: More Than Just Skincare

Facial oils are often seen as just another step in a routine. Something to apply quickly before moving on. I used to treat them that way too. My skincare was always quite simple. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve never really struggled with acne just the occasional hormonal breakout but nothing that made me rethink my routine too much. My skin felt fairly balanced for a long time, and I didn’t think about it all that deeply. But over the years, that’s changed.

When your skin begins to change

As I’ve got older especially moving through menopause and alongside an autoimmune condition my skin has become something very different. Drier, more sensitive, more reactive than it ever used to be. What once felt easy suddenly needed more care, more attention, and more understanding. It wasn’t about “fixing” my skin. It was about learning how to support it in a different way.

Finding a different approach

For a while, I did what a lot of us do I tried to adjust by adding more. Different products, different steps, more products to try to find something that would bring my skin back to how it used to feel. But it never really worked. If anything, it made my skin feel worse and gave me a drawer full of half or un-used sometimes expensive skin care, what a waste of money!

It wasn’t until I started simplifying things and really paying attention that something started to make sense.

Slowing down the moment

What surprised me most wasn’t just how my skin responded but how the experience itself changed. Applying a facial oil became the one moment in the day where I slowed down.

Warming a few drops between my hands. Pressing it gently into my skin. Taking a breath without rushing onto the next thing. It’s such a small thing, but I promise it doesn’t feel small when you do it. My routine isn't a long drawn out process, although not every day is perfect. Some evenings are quick, and that’s fine but I do like to have at least one night where I do take more time and more attention and treat my skin to a face mask or even a gentle face massage with my Gua Sha. This time I give to myself as my way to relax. When I do take that moment, I notice the difference not just in my skin, but in how I feel.

Why this matters in what I create

When I’m blending oils now this is always in mind. Not just how something performs on the skin, but how it feels to use. How it fits into someone’s day. How it might offer even a small moment of pause. Because it’s never just about the product.

A different way to care for your skin

Our skin changes. That’s something we definitely can’t control but how we respond to those changes, that’s where things begin to shift.

For me, letting go of trying to keep things the same, and instead learning to support my skin as it is now not how it was in my 20's or 40's. Gentler, easier, and more intuitively.

Final thought

It’s never just about the product.

It’s about the moment you create with it. And sometimes, that moment is the most important part.

With love
