How to Use Facial Oils and the simple mistakes that can stop them working

Facial oils are often one of the simplest steps in a skincare routine. But they’re also one of the most misunderstood. If you’ve ever tried an oil and thought it felt too heavy, didn’t absorb properly, or didn’t seem to “do anything” it’s quite often not the oil itself. It’s how it’s being used.
Using too much
One of the most common mistakes is applying too much product. Facial oils are concentrated, and your skin only needs a small amount. In most cases 2-4 drops is enough
Using more doesn’t improve results it can leave the skin feeling overloaded and prevent proper absorption.
Applying to completely dry skin

Facial oils work best when there’s a little moisture in the skin. Applying oil to damp skin helps to improve absorption, lock in hydration and give a smoother, more even finish
Try applying your oil straight after cleansing, or after a light mist or toner.
Rubbing instead of pressing
It’s easy to quickly rub products into the skin without thinking. But with facial oils, how you apply them matters. Instead of rubbing try warm a few drops between your hands and gently press the oil into your skin. This helps with absorption and creates a much softer, more even application.
Using oils at the wrong stage

Facial oils are usually best used as the final step in your routine. They act as a sealing layer, helping to lock in moisture, support the skin barrier and prevent water loss. Applying them too early can reduce the effectiveness of the products layered on top.
In most cases, this is the order that works best:
1. Cleanse twice - Removes makeup, SPF, and daily build-up.
2. Tone / Mist (optional) - Helps refresh the skin and lightly hydrate.
3. Water based Serum (if you use one) - Targets specific skin concerns like hydration or brightness.
4. Moisturiser (optional depending on skin type) - Adds extra hydration and comfort.
5. Eye Cream - Gently pat a very small amount with pads of ring fingers around the eyes, be gentle the skin here is very thin and delicate.
6. Facial oil (final step) - Seals in moisture and supports the skin barrier.
Facial oils are always best used as the last step, because they help lock everything in underneath and help product absorption.
Not adjusting for morning and evening

Your skin’s needs can change throughout the day.
In the morning: use a lighter amount and allow time for absorption before makeup or SPF
In the evening: you can use slightly more and take time to massage or press into the skin
Expecting instant results
Facial oils support the skin over time. They’re not designed to give dramatic overnight changes. Instead, they work gradually to improve skin comfort, support hydration and help bring balance back to the skin. Consistency is where you’ll see the real difference, don't give up after a week or two.

Keeping it simple
Facial oils don’t need to complicate your routine. When used correctly, they often replace the need for multiple products bringing everything back to something more simple and considered.
Final thought
Sometimes it’s not about changing what you use, just how you use it.
